Summary[]
Hina tells Takemichi to take her to the shrine on New Year's and tells him that they have made up. Takemichi and Emma, touched by the moment, begin crying. Draken notes that Takemichi is weak to women, weak at fighting, but reliable, just like "him", to which Mikey agrees. Mikey tells Takemichi to go on a ride with him. Meanwhile, Hina's parents watch from their balcony. Hina's mother remarks to her husband that it seems like his loss, and he remarks that this is how she is growing up. She warns him that Hina may disown him if continues to interfere;[2] he responds that he cannot have that, but mentions that it is a bit late for her to be out.
On Mikey's bike, Takemichi thinks about how Mikey appears as a mystery: he is intimidating in a group but appears calm and trustworthy when they are alone together. When Takemichi asks Mikey where his parents are, Mikey responds that he does not have any, as he only lives with his grandfather and Emma; because he and Emma had different parents, they did not live together initially. When Emma's mother abandoned her, she moved in with him and his older brother, who raised both of them. Mikey recalls that they used to follow Shinichiro around, and he would teach them things. Mikey tells Takemichi that sometimes he does not know what is going on: his brother should be alive but is not, and he does not understand what that means. During this time, Mikey says that he becomes disoriented and unable to tell the difference between wrong and right.
Takemichi realizes that Mikey is self-aware of the darkness inside of him and the potential of that darkness to take hold of him. Mikey says that though his brother was a weak fighter, he was the leader of a motorcycle gang, which surprises Takemichi. Mikey recalls that all the delinquents in Tokyo would gather around and idolize Shinichiro, who was weaker than him. In a flashback, a young Mikey asks Shinichiro how guys like him, when he is weak, romantic, and smelly. Smiling, Shinichiro responds that Mikey does not understand yet. Mikey tells Takemichi that his brother sparkled brighter than anything when he led his gang; the members were sure they would not lose as long as they could rely on Shinichiro. Takemichi says that Mikey is just like his brother, but Mikey says that he is just weak, while Takemichi is strong. Mikey tells him that winning fights is not the most important thing; winning the fight against yourself is. Though Takemichi is physically weak, he perseveres, even when facing Taiju.[3] Mikey asks Takemichi to scold him like his brother would if he loses control of himself. Takemichi promises that he will.
