Takemichi unable to time-leap after Naoto's death

After his time leap, Takemichi rushes to the Tachibana household, meeting Naoto outside; in an attempt to reassure himself that Naoto is still alive in the future, he meets Naoto outside and desperately shakes his hand. However, Takemichi shakes his hand to no avail: he cannot time-leap to the future, meaning that his trigger in the future, Naoto, is dead. As Takemichi thinks of the many times Naoto encouraged him, despite his failures, he breaks down. He tells Naoto to go home, apologizing for making him come out so late.

Grief-stricken, Takemichi sits on the bottom of a playground slide, where he remains for a while, with his eyes downcast. He notices a shadow of who he assumes to be Naoto; Takemichi recollects aloud when he and Naoto first met in the future, after Hina's death and his first time-leap.[2] He talks to Naoto, telling him about how he and the future Naoto have tried to save Hina on numerous occasions, but with little success. Even worse, Takemichi says he cannot return to the future anymore, as the future Naoto is dead.[3] He asks what he should do, but says that there is no point in consulting the Naoto in front of him. Takemichi begins muttering aimlessly; though he wants to change the past and save everyone, he concludes that he will always fail, declaring he is better off dead.

Suddenly, Hina appears behind him on the slide, bumping him gently. She tells Takemichi she loves him. He realizes that he mistook her shadow for Naoto's, and she has heard everything he has said. Hina asks Takemichi's actual age, and he replies that he is 26; she says she will only ask another question: has Takemichi proposed to her in the future yet? Takemichi admits that he has not yet, but blurts out that he thinks it would be nice if they got married, much to his own shock. When Hina asks if that served as a proposal, Takemichi answers yes; Hina responds that she can now die happy. As Takemichi's eyes well up with tears, he vows not to give up again, motivated by his love for Hina.
