Chifuyu feared and respected (manga)

Chifuyu feared and respected

On the first day of school, Chifuyu's classmates discuss how one of their fellow first-years got called out by delinquents from the upper grades. This first year, who turns out to be Chifuyu, is apparently known among his peers for being a punk. Outside the school, upon hearing his name called by an upperclassman, Chifuyu slams the upperclassman's head into the ground, saying that he does not respect or speak politely to anyone, not even those older than he. At school, Chifuyu receives the respect and fear of his peers, who tell him that not even the upper grades could defeat him and he that could rule over Japan if he wanted to. In response, Chifuyu dismisses this, as he sees the upperclassmen as lame.

Afterwards, as he is sitting in his desk, a classmate informs Chifuyu that there is an older student who got held back in one of the neighboring classes. His classmate speculates that the older student must be a delinquent, which rouses Chifuyu to fight him. Heading to the other classroom, he demands to see the older student, Keisuke Baji. However, he is surprised to find that Baji is a seemingly studious and straight-laced student, donning glasses and slicked-back hair. He wonders why a person like him would be held back. Later, Chifuyu approaches Baji and introduces himself. He then notices a kanji character which Baji has written incorrectly, and determines that Baji's appearance does not match his intellect; he asks why Baji chose to dress in that way, and Baji says that it is because he does not want to get held back again, which would make his mother cry. Chifuyu shows him the correct way to write the character, and Baji thanks him, telling Chifuyu that he is a good person. When Chifuyu finds out that Baji has been trying to write a letter, he teases him, much to Baji's chagrin. Nevertheless, Chifuyu continues helping Baji correct his writing mistakes.

Walking home from school with his classmate, Chifuyu is preoccupied, thinking about his encounter with Baji. Suddenly, he is ambushed by the biker gang Mandala, to which the upperclassman that Chifuyu beat up earlier belongs to. The leader of Mandala threatens him in order to avenge his underling. Chifuyu headbutts him, then prepares to fight the entire gang alone. Though he is a competent fighter, Chifuyu is vastly outnumbered and overpowered. Cornering him, the Mandala leader prepares to use a mop against Chifuyu.

Just then, Baji shows up, admonishing the gang for ganging up and using a weapon against Chifuyu. He thanks Chifuyu for helping him with his letter and offers to join the fight. Unexpectedly, he knocks out Mandala's leader with a single punch, and reveals himself to be a member of Toman, the First Division Captain. Baji is able to single-handedly defeat the gang, and tells them that if they hurt Chifuyu again, Toman will wipe out their entire gang.

After this, Baji invites Chifuyu over to his home, asking him if he likes Peyoung Yakisoba. They find out that they live in the same apartment building. Because there is only one package of yakisoba left, Baji suggests they split it together. Chifuyu reflects on this day when he first met Baji, the first person he ever respected and admired.
